چکیده

Case Report A 22-years-old woman was admitted to hospital on April 9, 1959 in the 18th week of her first pregnancy. She had been fit until six days before, when she developed lightheadedness, followed by flushing, and a throbbing occipital headache. At 7 p.m. on the day of admission, in bed, she began to have frequent sensations of lightheadedness, accompanied by throbbing occipital headache, and she lost consciousness repeatedly. In hospital, at 9.45 p.m., she was having two or three episodes of ventricular arrest a minute, each lasting 10 seconds. Her face blanched and she lay virtually unconscious; each attack was followed by a flush and a distressing headache. She was aware only of the headache. Between attacks the heart rate was about 100 a minute, the rhythm was regular and the blood pressure was 120/70. The first heart sound varied in intensity and there was a soft systolic murmur, maximal at the left sternal border; the second sounds were soft. There were no other clinical abnormalities. The uterus was the expected size for an 18-week pregnancy, and foetal movements were felt.

Prednisone in the Treatment of Adams-stokes Attacks.

Adams-Stokes attacks are seen most frequently in patients with heart block. They are usually due to a temporary cardiac arrest not infrequently occurring when an incomplete heart block becomes complete, although a number of other irregularities may precipitate unconsciousness in these patients (Parkinson, Papp, and Evans, 1941). They occasionally occur in patients with bradycardia from other ca...

Adams-Stokes syndrome caused by paroxysmal third-degree atrioventricular block.

Among I70 patients with Adams-Stokes syndrome, the majority had sinus rhythm between attacks. Clinical and electrocardiographic features of 67 patients in whom syncope was caused by paroxysmal third-degree atrioventricular block are discussed. The patients had normal pulse rates between attacks, their cerebral symptoms were usually not accompanied by cardiac symptoms, and 25 per cent had no sym...

Myocardial sarcoidosis.

SARCOIDOSIS is generally regarded as a systemic disease of unknown etiology that may involve any organ in a usually benign granulomatous process. In recent years it has become apparent that the myocardium is frequently involved and may result in bizarre arrhythmias or sudden death. This paper presents a review of 28 cases proved by autopsy and adds an additional case manifested by Stokes-Adams ...

Paroxysmal Heart Block in Bundle Branch Block.

When a patient is suspected of having Stokes-Adams disease the electrocardiogram is of critical importance, particularly in respect of the auriculo-ventricular (A-V) conduction time. Should this not be prolonged, the possibility of paroxysmal heart block remains, although the diagnosis of Stokes-Adams disease is uncertain without some degree of heart block recorded graphically. It is not known ...
